The ultimate goal of this project is the preparation of bio-based nano- and micro-structured ceramic-filled polymer hybrids (in particular polylactic acid, PLA) for packaging and other applications with lower environmental impact than hydrocarbon-based polymers. Variations in formulation and processing parameters of the composite materials, can contribute to the capability of tailoring the materials’ properties, in order to target specific applications. Resistance to weathering and barrier properties are examples of properties that need to be tailored. Cost minimization and resolving of possible weak points of the bio-based materials are additional challenges for this project. Overcoming obstacles in order for bio-based/bio-degradable materials applications to be extended will lead to a significant contribution to the roadmap towards the gradual replacement of conventional polymers/polymer composites with environmentally-friendly materials.
